Kenya to cut links with Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic

Kenya has severed ties with Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic (SADR).

In a statement, the new President William Ruto said his government had embarked on a process of winding down the entity presence in the country.

He said the country supports the United Nations framework as the exclusive mechanism to find a lasting solution of the dispute over Western Sahara.

This announcement comes shortly after Mr Ruto received a congratulatory message from His Majesty King Mohammed VI, the King of Morocco.

The leader of SADR, Brahim Ghali, was among those who attended William Ruto’s inauguration in Nairobi on Tuesday.

SADR has been agitating to transition from a semi-autonomous territory to self-rule, but Morocco has strongly opposed the proposal for the region to decide its future through a referendum.
