DR Congo torture concentrated in conflict zones reported by UN

A United Nations report stated that the vast majority of cases of torture in the Democratic Republic of Congo have occurred in areas affected by the conflict.

The report, issued by the UN's mission in Congo and its human rights office, documents more than 3,600 cases of torture committed between 2019 to 2022.

It identified almost 5,000 victims of abuse, including hundreds of cases of sexual abuse.

Acts of torture or other cruel treatment were committed by the Congolese armed forces as well as other armed groups.

The report says there is widespread impunity in conflict zones with less than 100 convictions over the three year period.
