Arbitration court in Nigeria has ordered striking university teachers to go back to class, while it considers a suit challenging their action by the governments.
The government approached the National Industrial Court to stop the lecturers from continuing their strike, after both parties failed to resolve their difference. It said the strike would result in irreparable damage to Nigerian students and to the country if not suspend.
The ASSU said it would study the court’s ruling and consider its option.
For the past seven months, public university teachers under the umbrella of the ASSU have shut down their classes across the country because of pay dis-agreements with the government.
The lecturers accused the government of failing to fulfil some of the agreements reached with the union 10 years past.
The teachers says poor funding and government non-chalance have been the major problems affecting public schools in the country.
